Distinguished Scientists, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Welcome you to China! Welcome you to Shanghai! Welcome you to Fudan! It is my great pleasure to open this international workshop in Fudan University. As many of you have already seen, Metamaterials and Plasmonics are two hot research fields currently. Many exciting new ideas and applications have been discovered in these two fields, such as the negative refraction, super imaging, cloaking, extraordinary optical transmission, as so on. Recently, there is a trend that these two fields become merging together as we go to the optical frequency regime. The aim of this international workshop is to bring together top scientists all over the world to exchange recent research progresses in these two fast developing fields. In particular, through the workshop, we hope to strengthen mutual collaborations between Chinese scientists and scientists from other countries working in these two fields.

I would like to take this opportunity to than Prof. C. T. Chan, Prof. Sailing He, and the local organization committee for their many helps in organizing this workshop. I would also like to thank the following funding agencies – Surface Physics Laboratory (State Key Laboratory) of Fudan University, Math&Phys Platform of Fudan University, Meta-973 project supported by the ministry of science and technology of China, and national natural science foundation of China, for financial supports. Finally, I would like to particularly thank Prof. Costas Soukoulis, who accepted my invitation in only 5 minutes this May.

I hope all the invited speakers will enjoy the two days’ technical program as well as other social activities during this workshop. I also encourage the audience, particularly the young students from Fudan University, to actively participate in the discussions after each talk, since it is really not easy to see simultaneously so many top scientists whose names you have known for long time by reading their papers.

I think that is all that I want to say, thanks so much for your attention. Now I would like to pass the time to the Chairman of the first session – Prof. Sailing He.

文本框: Vitality of the field of metamaterials as evidenced by rate of publication.
The organisers of this meeting are to be congratulated on assembling speakers of a high international standing who have told us about their state of the art work in metamaterials and plasmonics. The lively nature of the meeting reflects the rapid growth rate of our subject. The figure shows the growth in publications citing metamaterials and shows exponential growth with an increase of 70% per year.

We have heard about transformation optics which is fast becoming the design tool of choice for metamaterial applications; about new applications of metamaterials to non linear problems where enhancement of the effects offer new possibilities for applications. At optical frequencies silver is the material of choice for plasmonics but still leaves room for improvement and it was good to learn that surfactants can now improve the quality of silver surfaces. The range of subjects covered ranged from the highly theoretical (some even mentioned general relativity) through to practical applications. Workers from many disciplines contribute to this development: physicists, electrical engineers, materials scientists, surface scientists and more.

I have mentioned the speakers but would also like to say a few words about the audience. Full of mainly young people, the audience provided a lively backdrop to the talks with many probing questions asked. Those of us from other countries could sense that science in China is moving forward rapidly and that its future as represented by these young people must be very bright. This is a good omen for international collaboration and harmony.

Finally I must thank the organisers: Sailing He, CT Chan, and particularly Lei Zhou and his supporting team who have assembled such an excellent array of speakers, organised the event with great efficiency, provided an enthusiastic audience and delivered quite overwhelming hospitality to their guests. It has been a privilege to be part of this gathering.
